When he’s not artfully bringing his skills as an MC / producer as Chemist of the Smoke Screen / Smoke Noises camp, Cleveland native Tommy Sheridan thrives in a world of playful electronic music as Broken Keys. On his first official release since 2013’s Black Sand Beach, Sheridan mixes an appreciation for the wide-open spaces of house & beat music with the any-sound-goes production sense of classic hip-hop.

"Still primarily beat driven, there is a noticeable difference between the EP’s vibes and the experimental hip-hop he produces as 1/2 of Smoke Screen and 1/3 of Smoke Noises, trading purp-soaked instrumentals for garage-meets-ghettotech (“Cantina”/“Sativa 1.6″) and a minimal house aesthetic (“Snow Caps”). "If you're looking for the "Cleveland" electronic sound, if there is such a thing, Tommy Sheridan (aka Broken Keys) would be a good example. He's part of local hip-hop groups Smoke Screen and Smoke Noises and takes his cues from hip-hop DJs, blending the worlds of rap and electronic. On his latest record, Cantina EP, the genre-mashing is readily apparent. The title track, "Cantina," is driven by a danceable drum track but vocal tracks reciting "I started this gangsta shit and this the motherfuckin' thanks I get?" echo the merger."
